When I grow up I'm going to be a professional Character Technical Director. However I am currently an 3D artist in the medical industry. It's much more interesting than it sounds. But anyway above are some renders of a device that is inserted in the heart to keep blood flow during surgery. I modeled it in Maya and Solidworks and it is rendered in mental ray using Dielectric materials and photons.

Above are some nice renders of some pretty complex models I did in Solidworks and rendered in mentalray using the DGS shader. As you can see everything on this page had the same lighting and environment setup. The scene consists of a nurbs plane, an area light as the primary source and two spots to kick off some more speculartiy and get the whole of the object illuminated. There's also an environmental lookup spherical node with a surgical theater image in it.

This is a tool that I was set to recreate in 3D. I was given the actual tool and I remodeled it using a ruler and calipers. I rigged the device to actually do what it does, which is a complicated process to deploy a stent into the aorta. The model was created in Solidworks, rigged textured and rendered in Maya and Mental Ray.
